The First Boogie by Tom Morey

Tom Hugh Morey was born in August 1935 in Detroit, Michigan. When he turned 8, his family moved to California where he would develop his surfing skills. But, not before learning to bodysurf on his father’s back. Growing up in Laguna Beach, he was known to be one of the locale’s best nose riders. For Morey, surfing remained a hobby while he honed his musical skills as a jazz drummer, frequenting nightclubs around town and eventually turning pro in the 1950s. In 1957, Morey had graduated from the University of Southern California with a B.A. in Maths.

Afterwards, he worked for Douglas Aircraft, as a Process Engineer for composites. Morey worked in numerous jobs involving composite materials and processes that he later applied to his inventions. By the 1970s, Morey had been living in Hawaii whilst looking for innovative ways to ride the ocean waves. He continued to perform in jazz bands and write articles on all things surf-related for Surfer Magazine. Unhappy with how the surf mat was shaped and designed, he wanted a surfboard that allowed him to feel the waves through the board. Morey eventually went on to create the first Boogie Board by making use of the nine-foot piece of foam and his wife’s iron to shape it.

With Jim Faivre, Morey’s business partner, Boogieboarding become the fastest-growing water sport in the 1980s while inspiring a whole generation of young surfers.

Throughout the 50 years we've seen countless innovations that propelled the sport further, innovations that are common today.

Tom Morey passed away on October 14, 2021, leaving behind an untouchable legacy that reigns supreme to this very day.
