#MoreyBoogieForever

The story of the Boogie begins with the birth of Tom Morey on August 15, 1935. With an entrepreneurial eye and a degree in mathematics from University of Southern California, Tom started to craft the first Boogieboard when, after leaving Douglas Aircraft as a specialist in composite materials, he began to build custom surfboards in Ventura, California.

In 1965, Tom Morey created the Tom Morey Invitational surfing tournament, with prize money of $1,500 and held at Venture Point to promote his surfboard business. By 1969, Tom had created the first paper surfboard, reinforced with waterproof materials, an invention that sank on its maiden voyage.

In the 1970s, Tom had set his eyes on finding a new way to ride waves. Creating something between a surf mat and a surfboard, the first iteration of the Boogieboard was created with a piece of foam shaped with an iron and sheets from the Honolulu Advertiser. Originally called “S.N.A.K.E.” (Side, Navel, Arm, Knee, Elbow) and priced at $37, bodyboarders were given a kit to create their own custom Boogieboard. Since then, bodyboarding has seen countless new technologies incorporated that helped every Boogieboarder get closer to the wave and ride faster than before.

From the MACH 7 in 1982, winger rails in 1984, retractable skegs in 1987 to the dimpled bottom in 1992, these are examples of how Tom’s invention spawned more innovative and creative ways to be closer to the ocean.
